Skin layers

A lot of people don't know, but our skin is actually the largest organ in our body, both in weight and in surface area. Our skin actually forms the armor between our body and the outside world. After all, our skin is a big part of our appearance and often says a lot about how we feel. That is why it is important to take good care of our skin and to know exactly how our skin is built up.

What Are Skin Layers?

Our skin consists of 3 skin layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue. Each layer of the skin has its own characteristics and functions. The epidermis is the skin that we can see with our naked eye. The skin layer is very thin, less than a millimeter thick and around the eyes this skin layer is even thinner. The epidermis is very important as we can determine the skin type and whether the skin is in good condition. 

The dermis mainly consists of connective tissue and this is the layer that ensures the aging process of our skin. The dermis contains many important parts such as blood vessels, sweat glands, nerve endings, hair, sebaceous glands and fibers. The dermis creates a tissue structure that is firm and strong enough to support all these important parts in this skin layer. The nerve endings in this layer of skin detect changes in temperature if there are any and register the pressure and pain. The sebum and sweat glands, on the other hand, regulate the acidity in our own skin and protect it against infections.

Then there is the subcutaneous tissue, which is located between the dermis and the muscles and bones. This skin layer mainly contains fat cells, elastin and collagen. This layer of skin protects us against cold, pressure and possible bumps. This is also where all our excess ven and excess vitamins are stored, which can then serve as protection against serious weight loss. In addition, the subcutaneous tissue determines our body shape and the condition of the dermis and epidermis.
